The City of Grand Rapids Wants You to Stop Throwing Away Your Old Christmas Lights

Thanksgiving has come and gone, so if you celebrate Christmas, you're probably busting out the boxes full of decorations and lights to decorate your yard and home for the season.

Hopefully, you tested that strand of lights before you got up on the ladder, because it seems like the most common time we find out that our lights from last year aren't working, is right as we're going to use them for the season.

In fact, most homeowners discover that their lights aren't working between Thanksgiving and December First.

So if you find yourself with a dead string of lights and frustration, don't reach directly for the trash can. The city of Grand Rapids is giving an option to get rid of those lights without them ending up in the landfill.

What should I do with my broken Christmas lights if I live in Kent County?

If you are a Kent County resident and find yourself with a strand (or three) of broken lights, you have a free option to make sure they don't become pure garbage.

There are three locations currently that have a special box waiting for you to donate your broken or unwanted Christmas lights.

• North Kent Waste & Recycling Center in Rockford (2908 10 Mile Rd NE, Rockford, MI 49341)
• Administrative & SafeChem Center in Grand Rapids (1045 Wealthy St SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504)
• South Kent Waste & Recycling Center in Byron Center (10300 S Kent Dr SW, Byron Center, MI 49315)
