Reefer Madness: Pot Sales Ring Up $1.6 Million In First Week

Only four stores were ready to go with recreational marijuana when Michigan sales opened up on December 1, one more joined them last Friday and so far the numbers have been impressive.

Some of the 1400 communities that opted out of marijuana sales may want to reconsider after the impressive numbers put up in the first week of sales.

Only five stores opened up in the first week of legal marijuana sales in the state. Three in Ann Arbor, one in Morenci and one up north in Evart.

According to the Detroit Free Press, numbers for eight days of reefer sales totaled $1.6 million dollars in those five spots.

Comparably speaking, Colorado did one million in sales in just one day, but at 24 locations, most in their largest city, Denver.

The Evart and Morenci, the most remote locations, ran out of product, so they conceivably could have sold more. Supplies are short in the early going of rec weed, and supplies must be split between recreational and medicinal sales.

Lit Provisions in Evart was surprised a little bit by their swift sales numbers, especially since they only opened up on Friday, December 6, almost a week late.

“We are humbled that our first weekend of adult-use sales at Lit Provisioning Centers in Evart was so well received,” Lit COO Doug Hellyasr told UpNorthLive. “People traveled from across the state, braved the cold and stood in line for hours to be among the first to purchase recreational marijuana in Northern Michigan.”

“We will replenish our inventory for adult-use early next week, once we’re able to transfer an additional 42 pounds of Lume flower into Lit’s inventory for adult-use,” Hellyar told UpNorthLive. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to serving Northern Michigan’s cannabis community for years to come.”
