Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery Getting Its Donuts On for Dessert Wars [Audio]
Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery is baking up a half-dozen varieties of donuts to serve up for Dessert Wars.
Karey Robinette, the manager for the family-owned Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery, stopped by Channel 95.7's "Connie and Curtis" on Wednesday morning.
Her visit was tied to Dessert Wars, which is Thursday night at Amway Grand Plaza hotel's Ambassador Ballroom in downtown Grand Rapids.
"A lot of people think donuts, more for breakfast," Robinette told "Connie and Curtis." "Donuts can be considered a dessert, too."
Robinette's is among about a dozen bread, pastry and sweets makers from Grand Rapids and across West Michigan taking part in Dessert Wars, presented by Channel 95.7 and Hobart Corp. Running 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Amway Grand Plaza, 187 Monroe Avenue NW, admission is $8 and children younger than 9 years old are $2 with tickets available at the door. Admission includes 15 sample tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Grand Rapids non-profit Kids' Food Basket.
Robinette's, located at 3142 Four Mile Road NE in Grand Rapids, is a year-round operation.
Its Apple Haus includes the bakery where it makes it mouth-watering donuts, a cider mill, a dining counter and eating area, home-grown fresh fruits in season, other tasty treats and gift boxes. In its cider mill, Robinette's produces fresh cider from the Tuesday after Labor Day through through April or early May. In its winery, Robinette's produces its own wines and hard ciders in addition to carrying other Michigan wines.
Robinette's also offers cross-country skiing in winter, hayrides, a corn maze in fall, a mountain bike trail and tours.
For Dessert Wars, Robinette's plans to offer red velvet, chunky monkey, Black Forest, maple bacon, lime and apple donuts. There also are to be shot of Robinette's apple cider.
"We've never (really) made an apple donut before," Robinette said. "We've tried to make apple cider donuts, but they're super greasy."
She promises the apple donuts -- and all the others -- won't be greasy, but will be delicious at Dessert Wars.
Meanwhile, Robinette's is hosting Love, Wine & Chocolate from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, with wine tasting, chocolates and souvenir glasses at $10 per couple.
