National Clothing Retailer Closing All 541 Locations Including 19 In Michigan
Rue21, the teen apparel retailer, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the third time and plans to close all of its 541 stores nationwide within the next two months.
The company, headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, said several factors leading to its decision, including the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, a shift in shopping patterns from brick-and-mortar to online, underperforming retail locations, increased industry competition, and rising inflation.
Rue21 has previously filing for bankruptcy in 2003 and 2017, when it closed 400 stores and cut about $700 million in debt.
As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, Rue21 plans to liquidate all of its intellectual properties and intangible assets, in addition to closing all of its physical stores.
The closure of all 541 Rue21 stores nationwide will result in the loss of approximately 4,900 jobs.
Rue21's downfall is the latest in a series of retail bankruptcies and store closures, with other notable examples including Express, Joann, and The Body Shop.

It's sad to see another business close it's doors and people left without a job.
Unfortunately I feel like this is something that will continue to happen as more and more people move away from in person shopping and doing it online.
