Another familiar mall staple is shutting its doors for good as bankruptcy continues to claim popular retail brands across the U.S.

Known for its glittery accessories and ear-piercing stations, the parent company behind Claire’s and Icing has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, for the second time in just seven years. The latest filing, made in Delaware, comes because of declining mall traffic and changing consumer shopping habits, especially among younger generations who once flocked to these trendy stores.

As part of the bankruptcy process, the company plans to close at least 18 stores nationwide, including one location right here in West Michigan.

The Icing location at Woodland Mall is expected to close by September. It’s the only Michigan store on the list.

Icing, which is owned by Claire’s, sells accessories and beauty items aimed at teens and young adults. While Claire’s has long been a go-to spot for first-time ear piercings, Icing has been a mainstay for bachelorette accessories, trendy jewelry, and last-minute gifts.

The Woodland Mall is no stranger to stores leaving, recently having other trendy fashion retailers Forever 21 and Rue 21, shut down due to similar financial struggles.

However, the Woodland mall has been reliant in adding new stores to replace those that leave, including announcing that popular Brazilian steakhouse chain Texas De Brazil would be joining the mall later this year.

As the store prepares to say goodbye, it marks another chapter in the ongoing transformation of the American mall—and another empty storefront at Woodland Mall.
