Before you take a dip in the Michigan waters make sure they are safe to be in.

Michigan has tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams, meaning you're never more than 6 miles from a body of water or 85 miles from a Great Lake. Sometimes those waters become unsafe with high levels of bacteria or other pollutants and need to be closed for public safety.

Most Michiganders have their own favorite beach in Michigan. I have found that my favorite place to enjoy Lake Michigan is at PJ Hoffmaster State Park. And there is a secret parking place.

It's no secret to Michiganders that our beaches are awesome, but it's still cool to see them nationally recognized. Not one, but two Michigan beaches placed in a national ranking of the best freshwater beaches -- and one even nabbed the top spot!

Grand Haven State Park held the lead for quite a bit... but somehow, just got edged out and ended up the No. 2 Best Freshwater Beach in the U.S. according to a USA Today and 10 Best Poll. Michigan did have the most beaches in the running, though, with six beaches among the 20 that readers could choose from.
