After what feels like weeks of living inside a freezer, West Michigan is finally getting a break. A small one but still, a break.

We’ve just come off several solid arctic weeks where temperatures barely sniffed at 32 degrees. (We even saw a stretch that dipped into the negative teens) Snow boots became life saving, and gloves aren’t optional with these temperatures. And that foot of snow piled at the end of the driveway? It stopped being decorative a long time ago.

Now comes the good news. Meteorologists are calling for what can only be described as a “heat wave.” Not a real one, obviously. But, we are talking about temperatures above freezing for multiple days. Which, at this point, feels pretty luxurious to me.

Forecasters say a warming trend is setting up Thursday through the weekend as a ridge builds over the central United States. Translation for the rest of us: the atmosphere is finally giving us a break. High temperatures Thursday have a decent shot, somewhere between 60 and 80 percent, of hitting 32 degrees or higher. By the weekend, southern parts of the Upper Peninsula are almost guaranteed to be above freezing.

Around here in West Michigan, that means Thursday could crack freezing, Friday may follow suit, and by Saturday some forecasts are even flirting with 40 degrees. Forty. That’s “leave your coat unzipped” weather. That’s “maybe I can finally attack the driveway snow wall without losing feeling in my fingers” weather.

To be clear, our nights are still going to be cold. Overnight temperatures will continue to drop well below freezing, which helps limit major impacts to lake ice. Meteorologists are reminding anyone recreating on frozen lakes to stay alert. Warmer afternoons can still change ice conditions faster than you might expect.

Still, after weeks of relentless cold, this stretch feels like a reset. And while it’s not spring. (not even close.) We’ll take it because in West Michigan, this absolutely counts as a heat wave.
