Senate Bill 40, which was signed on Monday, December 23, 2024, and will go into effect on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, will increase the number of weeks that a person can receive unemployment benefits from 20 weeks to 26 weeks.

In a release, Governor Whitmer says that she signed the bill to better align Michigan with the rest of the country. In fact, Michigan was one of only 12 state in the country that offered less than 26 weeks of unemployment benefits.

Whitmer said,

With winter just around corner, Michiganders are still juggling high costs and a competitive job market. These bills will put money back in people's pockets so they can keep a roof over their heads, pay the bills, get a good-paying job, and put food on the table. I’ll work with anyone to make sure Michigan is the first place folks think of to live, work, and raise their families.

How Much Can Someone in Michigan Get Paid on Unemployment?

In addition to the extended timeframe in which benefits can be received, Michigan's maximum weekly benefit will be increasing. Currently, the maximum amount a person can receive per week is $362. That amount will increase incrementally over three years to $614 per paycheck.

As outlined in the bill, for a claim filed on or after January 1, 2025, a person will be eligible to receive $466 weekly. For a claim filed on or after January 1, 2026, that amount will increase to $530 weekly. For a claim filed on or after January 1, 2027, the amount will increase to $614.
