The holidays are here, and while many of us are busy planning family gatherings and shopping for gifts, West Michigan is facing a serious problem: our blood supply is running dangerously low. The first big winter storm of the season didn’t just bring snow—it also kept blood donors from making their appointments.

Dawn Kaiser, Director of Donor Services at Versiti Blood Center of Michigan, explained just how much of an impact this had. “Over the past week, we had hundreds of units cancel, and many donors didn’t show up,” she said.

That’s devastating because Versiti needs over 500 units of blood every day to meet the needs of our community. Last week, they barely collected 200 to 300 units.

This is about more than just numbers—it’s about people. Blood donations are essential for everything from emergency surgeries and car accidents to cancer treatments and chronic illnesses. When there isn’t enough blood, lives are at risk. It’s scary to think that a shortage like this could affect someone you know, or even you.

If you’ve ever thought about donating blood, now is the perfect time to step up. It’s easier than you think, and each donation can save up to three lives. To donate, you just need to be at least 17 years old, in good health, and free of transferable illnesses.

This holiday season, let’s make sure we’re taking care of each other. Giving blood is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give, and it only takes about an hour of your time. Visit your local blood center and help ensure our community has the life-saving resources it needs. Together, we can make a difference.
