Want to Help the City? You Can Volunteer for Grand Rapids’ Tree-Planting Initiative
Mayor Rosalynn Bliss is asking for your help.
Mayor Bliss and other Grand Rapids city officials are asking volunteers to help plant 200 trees throughout the city.
According to Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, Neighborwoods strives to fill 10,000 of the 30,000 tree vacancies throughout the city.
The city also plans to grow the urban tree canopy to roughly 40% throughout the entire city.
Neighborwoods will be happening on September 30th and October 1st, starting off with a kickoff event at the Gerald R. Ford Middle School.
According to Friends of Grand Rapids Parks' website, they say to,
"Join us for the annual tree planting event hosted by Friends of Grand Rapids Parks and the City Forestry Department. Plant trees in the surrounding neighborhoods. This is a great way to keep families and group volunteers together! Or clear the registration area, put away tools/supplies and assist FGRP staff."
Besides planting 200 trees, the nonprofit organization plans to give away 50 more.
Besides Mayor Bliss, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Forestry Department, there are many community members who are big advocates for this initiative.
President and Owner of Broad Leaf Brewery and Spirits and Brewery Vivant, Kris Spaulding says,
"My family has been planting trees with Friends (of Grand Rapids Parks) for around 10 years through our business and through the community tree planting events. We look forward to the plantings each year as a way to get out into different neighborhoods in town and help to beautify our community."
After Mayor Bliss kicks off the event, the tree planting will be happening on Friday, September 30th from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. On Saturday, October 1st, the tree planting will be happening from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM with an hour break and continuing from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM.
