The arctic blast gripping Grand Rapids and West Michigan is expected to loosen today, according to the National Weather Service's Grand Rapids Office and WZZM-TV, Channel 13.

The temperature reached a high of 8 degrees and a low a minus-1 degree Tuesday, with wind chills as low a 20 degrees-plus below zero at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.

In Holland at West Michigan Regional Airport, it reached a high of 11 degrees late Tuesday with a low a minus-1 degree early Tuesday and wind chills of minus-23 degrees.

Snow and windy conditions created near-blizzard conditions and sub-zero temperatures with sub-zero wind over the past three days. However, the high today is expected to reach 18 degrees.

Schools, businesses and government offices were closed Monday and Tuesday, with some still closed today.

The Wednesday forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of snow, with highs to reach the upper teens and overnight lows in the single digits.
