West Michigan has a new local hero, and he’s a four-legged one. Coby, a black lab from Wayland, is one of the 25 finalists for the 2024 Hero Dog Awards, a national competition run by American Humane. Coby isn’t just any dog—he’s a service dog who has saved lives and continues to make a tremendous impact on his partner's well-being.

Coby’s journey began in May 2022 when he was introduced to his partner through Paws With A Cause (PAWS), a Michigan-based organization that trains service dogs. Coby was trained as a hearing aid dog, providing assistance to someone with hearing impairments. From the very start, Coby formed an incredible bond with his new partner, quickly learning how to alert them to important sounds like doorbells, alarms, and even cars.

In October 2023, Coby and his partner were crossing a busy intersection when disaster almost struck. A speeding firetruck came barreling down the street, and Coby sprang into action. Without hesitation, he pulled his partner back just in time, avoiding a serious accident. Onlookers were stunned by the dog's quick reaction, shouting praise for the hero who had just saved a life. This wasn’t just a lucky moment—Coby’s daily assistance and protective instincts are what make him so special.

As we cheer on Coby in the 2024 Hero Dog Awards, we’re reminded that heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes they walk on four paws. Coby isn’t just a remarkable dog—he’s a shining example of the incredible bond between humans and animals, and the life-changing impact that a service dog can have. Wayland, Michigan can proudly claim him as their local hero.
