West MI Woman Accused of Stomping on Sea Turtle Nest in Miami

A 41-year-old Hudsonville resident is accused of entering a protected area in Miami Beach, Fla., and stomping on a sea turtle nest and poking it with a stick.

MLive reports that Yaqun Lu is a Chinese citizen, but has a residence in eastern Ottawa County listed as her home address.

Fox 2 Detroit reports that Lu was seen by authorities and by-standers entering the roped off area and "jabbing at the sea turtle nest and stomping all over the nest with her bare feet."

Luckily, no eggs were damaged.

Sea turtles are protected under federal law, and Florida law makes it illegal to harm them or their eggs.

Lu faces a felony charge of molesting marine turtles or eggs and is being held on $5,000 bond.
