Michigan has made a name for itself in the pizza world with the Detroit-style pizza, but there's another distinct style of pizza that originated (and can possibly only be found) in Michigan.

Have you ever heard of Monroe-style pizza?

I recently came across a TikTok where Seoung Lee (@chowdowndetroit), a food reviewer from Michigan, tried out Monroe-style pizza and I immediately had to dig to find out what in the world it is.

What Exactly IS Monroe-Style Pizza?

What makes Monroe-style pizza different from any other pie? Well, it turns out that the secret is mostly in the crust.

First of all, the dough used for the crust is sourdough, which you don't generally see. But the dough also has parmesan cheese in it.

The standard Monroe-style pizza is made with the sourdough crust, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and LOTS of pepperoni.

Where Can I Get Monroe-Style Pizza?

As far as I can tell, there's only one place in Michigan where you can currently get your hands on Monroe-style pizza.

That one place is at Royal's Molette Barcelona Bakery on Telegraph Road in Monroe, Michigan.

Again, their standard Monroe-style pizza is a classic pepperoni, but according to their website, you can have your favorite pizza toppings made Monroe-style.

About Royal's Mollete Barcelona Bakery

Royal's Mollete's reviews on Google are largely positive - with a 4.9 rating based on over 250 reviews. One reviewer said,

We drove 30 minutes to order some pizzas. WORTH. EVERY. MINUTE.

And that seems to be the overall consensus. Reviews for the bakery on Facebook are equally as complimentary with 100% of the 66 reviews recommending the food. Reviewer Jen B. tried it for the first time and didn't make it very far before she had to have her first bite,

We couldn’t wait to try it! We had a taste in the parking lot!! Loved it!!

The owner and master bread maker Antonio Viedma told the Monroe News that he brought the recipe to Monroe from his home country of Spain. He told the news outlet that the recipe dates back to 1554 and was a thing eaten by royalty.
