Why Michigan Should Be the Pizza Capital of the World

When you think of Michigan, you might picture the automotive industry or the Great Lakes. (Or, if you're from the south like me, you probably think of all of the snow.) But what if I told you Michigan is also a contender for the pizza capital of the world?

You might call me insane, but I'm not the only one who belives it- According to a study from the McNair Center for Free Enterprise at Northwood University, Michigan is a natural contender for the best pizza.

First of all- we are home to four of the top ten quick-service pizza chains in the United States: Domino’s Pizza (#1), Little Caesars (#3), Hungry Howie’s (#8), and Jet’s Pizza (#9). Dubbed the “Michigan Four,” these brands collectively generated over $14 billion in U.S. sales in 2023. That accounts for 30.5% of the national pizza market, no one else comes close.

Globally, these Michigan-based chains made an even bigger splash, bringing in nearly $24 billion, which amounts to 15% of worldwide pizza sales. That’s an incredible feat for four companies headquartered within a 60-mile radius of each other in Southeast Michigan.

But what makes Michigan’s pizza dominance so unique isn’t just the numbers; it’s the culture. These brands have brought signature flavors to millions, from Little Caesars’ famous “Hot-N-Ready” to Jet’s thick Detroit-style crust. Michigan’s innovative approach to pizza has shaped the way we all enjoy this timeless dish.

Even Detroit-style pizza is making its way into stores via Motor City Pizza Co. and Buddy's. Even national frozen pizza brand DiGiorno is making its own version of our iconic pizza.

Plus- let's be honest, Chicago pizza is closer to lasagna than pizza, so it shouldn't even be in the running.

Pizza is woven into American life—Think about how often you have it, and then multiply it. 3 billion pizzas are eaten annually in America, with the average person consuming 46 slices a year. And Michigan, with our entrepreneurial spirit and pizza passion- is at the heart of it all.

It’s time the world recognizes what we’ve always known: Michigan is the true pizza capital.
