Get out and enjoy the winter weather this weekend. There are several events happening in downtown Grand Rapids -- from the Golf Show to ice sculptures and Human Hungry Hippos! Also this weekend, you can watch the Opening Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics, Learn to Luge, and take a Polar Plunge! There are also a few concerts and sporting events.

    The 1st annual World of Winter festival kicks off on Friday. A full slate of winter activities will be happening in Downtown Grand Rapids. The 8-day festival (which runs through Friday, February 16th) is designed to take advantage of Michigan’s cold climate, provide fun ways for people to get outside and enjoy the season and make Grand Rapids a better winter city, which makes Grand Rapids a better year-round city. Activities planned for this weekend include at Rosa Parks Circle include a PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Watch Party on Friday, and a Human Hungry Hungry Hippo Tournament on Sunday, among all the other events scheduled.     Learn to Luge Weekend

    Learn to luge at one of only four luge tracks in the United States. Although shorter in overall length than the Olympic tracks in New York and Salt Lake City, the Muskegon Luge track provides an Olympic thrill with the safety of the participant in mind. The size of each session is limited, so participants can expect to get 3-6 runs depending on weather conditions and efficiency of the group and personal pace. The first 20 minutes of the session you will receive instruction from an experienced luge coach and safety equipment. During free sliding time a coaches will be positioned along the track to give you instruction throughout the session. The last 15 minutes of each session is set aside for participant certificates and a medals ceremony.

    Turk Lake Polar Plunge

    The Turk Lake Polar Plunge in Greenville takes place this Saturday. Registration starts at 12:00 pm. The parade of costumes will take place at 2:55 pm with the plunge into Turk Lake following at 3:00 pm. Awards will take place immediately following the last plunger. Polar Plunges are a Law Enforcement Torch Run event -- one of the largest grassroots fundraisers for Special Olympics globally. Officers from both Law Enforcement and Corrections help raise funds and create awareness for Special Olympics year round. By participating in a Polar Plunge you are helping to raise funds for over 23,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan.
