10 Things To Do this Weekend: May 4th-6th
You won’t run out of things to do this weekend! There is the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo on Saturday. There is also ice skating, tulips, walks, free comic books, naked gardening, free pet adoption, and a party for the Planet!
Some activities include the kids, while others are more for the adults.

This year’s Stars on Ice tour will put American fans front and center to experience the best of U.S. Figure Skating. Joining Maia & Alex Shibutani as 2018 Olympic medalists on the 2018 tour will be U.S. Olympic Team Bronze Medalists; two-time and reigning National Champion Nathan Chen, U.S. Champion and overnight sensation Adam Rippon, 2018 U.S. Ladies Champion Bradie Tennell, and National Champion Mirai Nagasu, who made history by landing the first triple axel for an American woman at the Olympics.

Celebrate the joy, tradition and beauty that is Tulip Time. Enjoy parades, Dutch dance, shows and events, along with millions of tulips. This weekend you can check out the Carnival and the Kinder Carnival at the Holland Civic Center. The Tulip Time Run will be Saturday morning.

March for Babies 2018

Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. every year, and each one needs us. The money you raise will be a lifeline for moms and babies near you and across the country. Join more than 1500 people at the West Michigan Grand Rapids walk in support of moms at every stage from preconception to post-delivery with research, programs and education—and it all comes together with a celebration at March for Babies.

Free Comic Book Day

Once a year, on the first Saturday in May, Comic Shops join forces worldwide to offer free comic books to the masses. Their aim is to spread the word about everything comic books have to offer by sharing their favorite titles in an approachable, risk-free way. Several stores in the Grand Rapids area are participating, including Argos Book Shop, Goldmine Comics & Cards, Outlier Comics, Tardy's Collector's Corner, The Collectors Resource, The Comic Signal, and Vault of Midnight.

World Naked Gardening Day

Cost: Free (unless you get arrested!)
The first Saturday in May is World Naked Gardening Day. People across the globe are encouraged to tend their portion of the world's garden unclothed as nature intended. (The forecast for Grand Rapids on Saturday is Sunny and mid 70’s). Keep in mind most communities have indecent exposure laws. (And I’m not so sure how much I’d want to be naked around sharp pruning tools, weed wackers, and gardening chemicals).

This year, 111 locations across the country will be participating! Get ready to adopt a new furry friend and make a homeless pet’s dream come true! Your life will be forever changed when you give a pet a second chance at life. Adoption fees will be paid by the Bissell Pet Foundation during Empty the Shelters. However, you are responsible for paying any dog licensing fees (varies by county) or other fees.

Cinco de Mayo is a day to commemorate the Mexican Army's difficult victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. Here in the U.S. Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. Many local restaurants and bars will be having special events. Check your favorite bar or restaurant for details. (Some places are combining Cinco de Mayo with the Kentucky Derby!)

2018 Grand Rapids Walk to Cure Arthritis

Family-friendly 5K fundraising Walk with 1 mile route option. No registration. Raise/donate $100 to earn the official Walk to Cure Arthritis t-shirt. Walker check-in and Walk-in registration begins at 12:00 pm with the Walk starting at 1:00 pm. Light refreshments, Kid Zone, sponsor exhibits, PAWS for Arthritis tent, arthritis information available for all registered walkers. Dogs are welcome! Prize Drawing at 2:30 PM!
