In 2025, Grand Rapids has already faced a series of heartbreaking restaurant closures. Beloved establishments like Rockwell Republic, Beacon Corner Bar, GR Noir Wine & Jazz, and more have closed their doors in recent months saying they fell victim to economic challenges and changing consumer habits.

It’s incredible to witness restaurateurs who choose to honor their commitment to feed our community. The latest is Steve Martinez, the owner and creator of Basalt. He recently admitted in a powerful video that rather than give up on his dream, he has chosen to adapt and evolve into a new concept.

In a recent Instagram post, Steve shared his vision for Basalt’s future. While he announced plans to close his restaurant Basalt. But don't worry, he's not going to get out of the game.

Instead, he plans to pivot his branding, expand the restaurant’s hours, and introduce menu items at more accessible price points. Basalt as it currently stands, will close their doors on April 13th and discontinue service as a Brick and Mortar, and in its place will be the newly redesigned Asada on Wealthy.

As a longtime fan of what Steve has built at his Wealthy Street location, it’s amazing to see that his approach reflects a deep understanding of the current economic climate for everyone in West Michigan. By extending operating hours, Asada on Wealthy will be able to better cater to diverse dining preferences.

This adaptive strategy not only benefits fans of Basalt, It serves as a beacon of hope and a model for other Grand Rapids establishments fighting similar challenges. Steve’s dedication to his craft and his community underscores the importance of innovation and perseverance in the face of adversity. I'm lucky to personally know how on brand this is for him. Steve and his staff truly love their customers. When I first moved to Grand Rapids, Steve was one of the first people to engage with me and care about my life, and I see him do this with so many others who walk through his doors.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s crucial to support local businesses that are striving to adapt and thrive. Let’s celebrate and support entrepreneurs like Steve, who refuse to give up, because they’re the ones fighting to keep our amazing dining scene alive.
