Can You Fly Out of Gerald R. Ford International Airport With Edibles?
Every once in awhile, no matter how much we love it in West Michigan, we hop on a plane and skip town. It could be a business trip, or a weekend getaway. Maybe you're planning a trip out of town to see your family for the Holidays.
No matter the reason you're heading on a jet plane, there are lots of us who enjoy consuming cannabis, and sometimes you're planning to head to a place that either doesn't have what you want, or doesn't sell what you'd like at all.
So, what exactly are the rules when it comes to flying with cannabis? Well, it's tricky.
Can you fly with edibles?
The legal answer is- no, you cannot fly with any marijuana products per the rules of the TSA. All illegal substances are prohibited to fly with, and on the federal level cannabis is considered illegal, even though it's legal here in the state of Michigan.
However... there is some grey area when it comes to this rule. According to the TSA website, "TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, Meaning, they're not actively looking for your edibles.
But, if they're out in the open,TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities even if the substance is legal in the state that the airport is located in.
So basically, if you think you can be slick enough, there is a world you can do it, but you do run the risk of possibly being busted. So, it's not recommended.
As for medical marijuana? Same rules apply- unfortunately.
Can you fly after CONSUMING edibles?
There is no law prohibiting taking an edible before you walk INTO the airport. However, you legally cannot take them into the airport according to the rules. But hey, if you need a few milligrams for the flight, be responsible with your dosage.
Also, make sure you're not TOO high, because that's never a fun time on a plane. You can be held accountable if you act up thanks to your edibles, just like you would be if you showed up too drunk for your flight.
