When I gave birth at Corewell Health Hospital (Butterworth) in downtown Grand Rapids back in late 2023, I remember the experience being filled with so many emotions—excitement, exhaustion, and joy. But one thing I didn’t think about much at the time: was the food.

I'll be honest, it was… fine. Nothing memorable, but it did the job while I was laying in bed for three days waiting for my little guy to join the world. I lusted for things I'd get once I left, because I knew that's where the "good food" was. That’s why I can’t help but feel a little envious of the new baby celebration menu now being offered at the same hospital.

Corewell Health has introduced a special dining option for new moms and their birthing partners. It’s called the “baby celebration menu,” and it sounds incredible. Some of the dishes they're offering include salmon, beef tips, crab cakes, and even cheesecake for dessert. And if you’re vegan or dairy-free, no worries—the menu accommodates several dietary restrictions too.

After doing all this work, I would have KILLED for some crab cakes

The idea behind this new program was to elevate the dining experience during one of life’s most meaningful moments. As someone who’s been through the whirlwind of childbirth, I love that they’re putting such thought into making moms feel celebrated. It’s not just about the food—it’s about creating a moment to pause and enjoy the start of this new chapter before the chaos kicks off again.

There’s even a healing menu option for mothers who experience loss, which shows how much thoughtfulness has gone into this program. The celebration menu has been a pilot program since October 2024, and it’s already been called a success by Corewell Health’s Executive Chef Mick Rickard. Kudos to their staff for making moms feel as special as they are, as they start the next important chapter of their life.
