Sprinkles Donut Shop just had its grand opening Jan. 31, but owner Gary VanderStelt is making extra time to take part in Dessert Wars.

The VanderStelt family-operated Hudsonville bakery and sweet shop brought in some yummy cupcakes, donuts and baked goods for Channel 95.7's "Connie and Curtis" to sample this morning. The visit came ahead of Dessert Wars, which is Thursday night at Amway Grand Plaza hotel's Ambassador Ballroom in downtown Grand Rapids.

"We'll probably make a whole bunch of mini-donuts that we make for special events" like weddings for Dessert Wars, VanderStelt said.

Sprinkles is among about a dozen sweet treat makers from Grand Rapids and across West Michigan taking part in Dessert Wars, presented by Channel 95.7 and Hobart Corp. Running 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Amway Grand Plaza, 187 Monroe Avenue NW, admission is $8 and children younger than 9 years old are $2 with tickets available at the door. Admission includes 15 sample tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Grand Rapids non-profit Kids' Food Basket.

Sprinkles is operated by VanderStelt and five other family members -- including his 70-year-old father, Gary VanderStelt Sr., who had retired after 50 years in the business and owning bakeries in Muskegon and Coopersville.

It's been a big deal to get Sprinkles up and running, Gary VanderStelt Jr. said.

"We've had no days off since we opened November 8," he said.

Open seven days a week, Sprinkles is located in a former Blockbuster Video at 6450 28th Avenue in Hudsonville in a retail center that includes a Family Fare supermarket. Sprinkles offers donuts, muffins, cupcakes, cookies and beverages and is open seven days a week.

Vanderstelt said the family started rehabbing and renovating Sprinkles' location last June and it took three months to come up with the name.

"Did a 12-year-old come up with it?" Connie quipped to VanderStelt about Sprinkles' name.

VanderStelt didn't exactly reply no to that question.
