WNBA Files Trademark Application To Bring Back Detroit Shock
According to NBC News, on Thursday January 30th the WNBA quietly filed a trademark application this week for the name “Detroit Shock.”
The bid to bring back the Detroit Shock is being lead by the owner of the Detroit Pistons Tom Gores and his wife Holly.
On Friday Gores put out a press release talking about brining the Shock back to Detroit:
“This is an exciting opportunity to welcome the WNBA back to Detroit and bring additional investment and economic activity into the city, For the WNBA this is home, and our bid represents an unprecedented opportunity for the league to come full circle and effect a long-hoped-for Detroit homecoming. No city is more prepared to embrace the team as a community asset that drives unity and common ground.”
Where Did The Detroit Shock Go?
The Detroit Shock were a WNBA team from 1998 to 2009 and played at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
During that time they won three WNBA Championships in 2003, 2006 and 2008.
Then In 2009, the franchise moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they played until 2015. Today, they play as the Dallas Wings.
