If you’re a homeowner in Michigan (or even just renting and want to feel a little safer at night) there’s a seriously awesome program you should know about.

The state of Michigan will come to your home and install brand-new smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors for free. It’s all part of a statewide safety initiative called MI Prevention, and it’s designed to help reduce fire deaths and CO-related emergencies.

The best part of this program is the fact that it’s not a “hand out”, they actually come to your home, do an inspection, and then install the appropriate detectors in the areas you need them most, for free of charge. This program is perfect for you if you’ve recently moved, are a first-time homeowner, or if your detectors are pushing that 10-year mark

(FYI: most alarms have an expiration date, you shouldn’t just wait until they start chirping at you to replace them!)

This program has one purpose: to keep people safe, especially in homes that might not be up to date on these kinds of simple and often overlooked safety features. The program works with local Michigan fire departments, so chances are,  your neighborhood firefighters will be the ones swinging by to help you out.

It’s not just a program to check something off your “honey do” list, it truly saves lives. Fires and carbon monoxide incidents can escalate quickly, and early detection makes all the difference. Plus, with the cost of literally everything going up these days, why not take advantage of something that’s free?

You can learn more or request alarms on the Michigan.gov website under the MI Prevention program, so take advantage of this awesome program that could save your family’s life.
