Be Alert! Michigan Drivers Likely To See More Deer Starting Friday
Starting this Friday, November 15, Michigan drivers should be extra vigilant as the firearm deer hunting season kicks off.
This annual event not only brings hunters into the woods but also significantly increases the likelihood of deer crossing roads, raising concerns about vehicle-deer collisions.

The firearm deer season runs from November 15 through November 30, and it is preceded by a five-day quiet period that began on November 10th.
During this quiet period, hunters are preparing for the season while the woods calm down, allowing deer to return to their normal patterns.
According to Capt. Pete Wright of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this time acts as a reset button for deer, which can lead to more successful hunts once the season opens.
Drivers are advised to be on high alert, especially in rural areas and near wooded regions where deer are more likely to be present.
The DNR has noted that deer tend to be more active during dawn and dusk, making these times particularly hazardous for motorists.
In 2022 alone, Michigan recorded nearly 59,000 deer-related crashes, with a notable spike in incidents during November.
In fact, approximately 11,000 of those crashes occurred in November, highlighting the urgency for drivers to remain alert during this time.
To help reduce the risk of accidents involving deer, the Insurance Alliance of Michigan advises drivers to do the following:
- Stay Alert: Be particularly watchful at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.
- Slow Down: Reduce speed in areas known for high deer populations, especially near wooded regions and fields.
- Use Caution: If you see one deer, be aware that others may be nearby since they often travel in groups.
- Avoid Swerving: If a collision seems unavoidable, it’s safer to brake firmly and stay in your lane rather than swerving, which can lead to more severe accidents
