Charles Rogers was an amazing college wide receiver, but washed out in the pros with the Detroit Lions, and now reports say he is dead.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Rogers died of unspecified causes at the age of 38. He had most recently lived in South Florida. Rogers had a history of drug issues, going all the way back to his NFL days.

Rogers' high school coach, Don Durrett, confirmed to Chris Solari of the Free Press that Rogers has indeed passed.

A former teammate of Rogers at MSU, Chris Baker has posted on Twitter that he talked to Rogers' mom and she confirmed his death:

“Devastated to learn of the passing of my spartan brother Charles (Rogers). Spoke with his mom this morning. Please pray for her and his children. Please also be respectful of their privacy at this difficult time. Rip Chuck.”

Rogers grew up on the tough East Side of Saginaw and was called by Durrett, the best athlete he ever saw, and he coached several MSU, Um and future pros at Saginaw High.

“I’ll tell you, he was — and I’m including Flint, too, since I coached at Flint Northern all those years — he’s the best athlete I ever seen. I mean, honestly,” Durett told the Free Press. “We’re talking about basketball, football and track together. He could have had a scholarship in all three sports. That’s how good. … I haven’t seen nobody that fast that could do it all. He was just a blessed athlete that could do it all.”

Two years ago, Channel 2 in Detroit caught up with Rogers in Florida.
