Flying Out of Grand Rapids This Thanksgiving? These Are The Busiest Travel Days
It's almost time to stuff your face with turkey, enjoy time with family, and maybe even watch the Detroit Lions win on Thanksgiving Day. But for some of us- it requires a bit traveling to get to our Thanksgiving Dinner table.
This Thanksgiving, Grand Rapids’ Gerald R. Ford International Airport is gearing up for its busiest holiday season yet.

Airport officials are forecasting a 5% increase in passenger traffic compared to 2023 and an 8% rise compared to 2022, setting the stage for record-breaking travel numbers.
More than 148,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport from November 22 to December 4. But- the busiest day for departures is expected to be Wednesday, November 27, while Sunday, December 1, is anticipated to see the most returning travelers.
If you're heading to one of these popular Thanksgiving destinations and flying out of Grand Rapids, you might see some extra lines. The most popular destinations for thanksgiving week include sunny hotspots like Orlando, Tampa, and Sarasota, as well as bustling cities like Denver, Phoenix, and Austin.
With such high traffic, travelers should prepare for longer lines and packed flights. But don’t worry—there are ways to make your trip smoother.
Tips to Speed Up Your Airport Experience
- Arrive Early: Plan to be at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight for domestic travel, even if you know that going through TSA in GRR tends to be quick.
- Pre-Check Options: Enroll in TSA PreCheck or Clear for quicker security screening, especially if you're traveling to a larger airport for your final destination.
- Pack Smart: Review TSA’s guidelines to avoid delays at security, don't bring things that will get you pulled aside or slow you down.
- Check Flights: Stay updated on your flight status via the airline’s app or website.
- Plan Parking: Reserve airport parking in advance to avoid last-minute hassles, there are several nearby lots that offer shuttle service, or you can reserve your spot ahead at the airport online.
The holiday season is hectic, and while you may not encounter long lines at GRR most of the year, preparing for them during the holiday season will only keep you feeling happy, merry, and bright as you arrive at your destination.
