Grand Rapids Construction Updates for Memorial Day Weekend: What You Need to Know
As Memorial Day Weekend arrives, travelers in and around Grand Rapids need to be aware of ongoing construction projects that may impact their plans.
Good news for Grand Rapids commuters: the weeks-long closure of US-131 southbound is finally over. Initially closed at Burton Street and then Hall Street, the freeway is now open. The northbound side, previously closed at 28th Street, reopened several weeks ago.
As of 5 PM on Thursday, both directions are accessible, easing traffic through the area just in time for the holiday weekend.
Ongoing Construction Projects
Despite the reopening of US-131, there are still significant projects that could affect your travel:
1. Northbound US-131 Ramp to I-96 and M-37
- Closure Duration: Through mid-September
- Detour Route: Continue north on US-131, exit at West River Drive (Exit 91), and re-enter southbound US-131 to access I-96 and M-37.
- Lane Closures: The left two lanes of northbound US-131 will be closed between Ann Street and I-96.
2. US-131 Reconstruction from 76th Street to 100th Street
- Closure Duration: Expected completion in November 2025
- Detour Route: The section is reduced to one lane.
- Lane Closure: One lane open through area on SB side
Tips for Navigating the Area during the Holiday weekend:

You can also follow detour signs and pay attention to posted detours to navigate around closed ramps and lanes effectively. And finally- allow extra travel time! Given the ongoing construction and expected high travel volume, allow additional time for your journey.
While the reopening of US-131 southbound is a relief, ongoing construction projects will still impact travel this Memorial Day Weekend. By staying informed and planning accordingly, you can minimize delays and enjoy a smoother trip.
