Two Major Downtown GR Ramps Reopen Just in Time for Christmas Travel
If you’ve been stressing out when you’re driving through downtown Grand Rapids because of the traffic from the recent emergency ramp closures, you can breathe a little this morning.
Two of the busiest ramps in the city are officially back open just in time for Christmas travel. MDOT confirmed Saturday morning via social media that the ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 and the ramp from northbound US-131 to eastbound I-196 have both reopened after being closed for weeks.
This sudden closure started back on December 2nd after a semi truck carrying about 14,000 pounds of pea gravel drifted into the westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 ramp, crashed, and ended up wedged underneath the ramp structure.
The driver suffered only minor injuries and, thankfully, no other vehicles were involved. The damage however, was enough to shut everything down and turn downtown commutes into a game of “guess which detour is the worst choice today.”
We can be grateful that in spite of the cold and snowy weather recently, this reopening happened earlier than expected. MDOT originally projected the ramps would stay closed into early January at best, April at worst, which would have been rough timing with holiday travel, last-minute shopping, and family visits already stressing the road system.
But, this isn’t a permanent reopening, it’s just there to make the new few weeks easier. MDOT shared that this is a temporary fix. While the ramps are usable again, the long-term repair work is still coming. A full, permanent fix isn’t expected until the end of April, and the project is still listed on the MiDrive map as active.
So yes, traffic is flowing again. Yes, your GPS might finally stop screaming at you that you should go any other way. But, make sure you paying attention in coming months because this stretch of road isn’t done being under construction just yet. For now, consider it a small holiday win for Grand Rapids drivers.
