If it feels like you’ve spent half of 2025 zig-zagging around construction cones, detours, and lane closures, you’re not alone.

After months of delays and detours, two major traffic pain points in West Michigan quietly reopened over the weekend, bringing a little hope that orange barrel season might actually be winding down.

First up, the I-196 and U.S. 131 interchange, which has been a construction headache that’s dragged on longer than expected, finally appears to be back open.

The project, which started back in September, was supposed to wrap up weeks ago but got delayed after cold overnight temperatures in the 30s slowed the concrete’s curing process.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), crews were working on five bridges as part of a $1.3 million project meant to extend their service life.

As of Friday night, the barrels were gone and lanes were clear (I drove through myself just to make sure), even though MDOT hasn’t officially posted an update on its website or social media yet.

Then, in a bit of unexpected good news, a stretch of southbound U.S. 131 through Kent and Allegan counties also reopened on Saturday.

The freeway had been shut down earlier in the week after a semi-truck hauling heavy machinery hit the 146th Avenue bridge in Dorr Township. It was the second time that overpass has been struck in just a few months, which has been a major headache for other drivers in the area.

Southbound lanes reopened to traffic on Saturday, though the 146th Avenue bridge itself remains closed until repairs can be made. (Hopefully, this time someone won’t hit it again before they have a chance to fix it.)

So yes, there are still a few lingering detours out there in West Michigan, but for the first time in months, it feels like we can finally breathe a little easier behind the wheel.

Winter might be coming, but at least we’ll be dodging snowflakes instead of orange barrels.
