Grand Rapids Limits Days You Can Set Off Fireworks

Want to celebrate the Fourth of July early with fireworks? Probably not the best idea... Grand Rapids just cut back the number of days you can legally shoot off fireworks and increased the amount of the fine you could be hit with.

Under previous Michigan law, commercial grade fireworks could be shot off on 30 days of the year, those days surrounding national holidays. In December of 2018, a new state law reduced that number and gave local governments more control.

Wood TV 8 reports that on June 11, the Grand Rapids City Commission voted to change the number of days fireworks are allowed to 11 or 12, depending on the day of the week July 5 falls on.

They also set the times and dates when fireworks may be set off.

Here's when you can set off fireworks in Grand Rapids:

• 11 a.m. December 31 to 1 a.m. January 1
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. June 29 to July 4
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. July 5, if that date is a Friday or Saturday
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Labor Day

GR also also approved a civil fine of $1,000 for each violation of the fireworks ordinance. Previously, the City’s fine structure was $50 for the first offense, $100 for a repeat offense, and $200 for offenses thereafter.
