There aren't many things we would consider an overall positive when it comes to the pandemic. But when the city of Grand Rapids decided to allow the redistricting of businesses and restaurants downtown to welcome social districts, everyone won.

If you haven't visited downtown Grand Rapids in recent years, you may be unfamiliar with our social districts. A Social District is an area designated by the Grand Rapids City Commission where alcoholic beverages sold in the area may be consumed in specifically designated 'social zones'.

What is a social zone?

These zones generally include seating areas on a street or sidewalk or on City-owned property, like a parking lot or park. People can also walk freely within the district with alcohol purchased from a participating bar or restaurant. One popular social district currently is on the street surrounding The B.O.B. and Van Andel.

Many people wondered if the city planned to roll back the popular social districts now that we're back 'open', but it appears they're just adding more areas you can stroll with a brew.

The social district law originally had a “sunset” clause of ending on Jan. 1, 2025. However, earlier this year it was announced they would be staying for good.

Where will the new social districts be?

Grand Rapids currently has four social districts: Center City, Monroe North, Bridge Street and Heartside/Ionia.

According to a press release from the city, The first new social district will be called East Fulton Social District, and will include Fulton Street, from Union to Carleton. Businesses in the area include Buffalo Traders Lounge and Post Off Wine Bar.

The second district approved will be the East Hills Social District. It will run down Cherry Street, from Eastern to Diamond, as well as Diamond Avenue from Fulton to Wealthy, and Lake Drive from Eastern to Luton. The businesses you'll find in this district include: Paddock Place, Grove, Greenwell, Brewery Vivant, and Maru.
