Why You Might Hear Gunshots in Grand Rapids During the Day This Month
I'm probably not the only person who does this, but when I hear a loud bang outside of my home, I rush to my neighborhood Facebook page and check to see what it might be. While I'm familiar with the game "fireworks or gunshots" thanks to growing up in Kentucky, some people may be startled if they hear unexpected loud noises near their house.
That's why the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) have issued a warning for one area of the city that may hear unexpected gunshots in the near future.

According to a Facebook post made by GRPD, if you live near I-196 in Grand Rapids you may hear a lot more gunshots over the upcoming weeks. But- don't worry: you're not in danger.
Starting now through April 1st, Grand Rapids police officers will be taking their mandatory firearms training at the GRPD gun range. They warn that if you live in, or are near Market Ave SW and I-196 during those times, you may hear gunshots.
They also listed training times to be on Mondays through Thursdays until April 1st, from 8 AM - 1 PM & 6 PM -10 PM. So again, if you hear a ton of gunshots you didn't expect (not that we usually do) during that time, you may just be hearing GRPD officers at work.
This training is especially important because while we all hope an officer never has to draw or use their firearm in the line of duty, we do want to be assured that they are well trained and able to so. So while, it may be weird or scary to hear a lot of gunshots randomly over the next few weeks, it's all to help keep the city safe in the long run, and warn residents not to be alarmed if they hear it. So be patient!
