A recent study revealed that access to affordable transportation is a growing priority for many people, and Grand Rapids is working to address this need. Over the summer, the city launched a pilot program aimed at expanding access to Lime scooters and bikes, offering riders five free half-hour daily rides.

The program ran for five weeks, and the results surprised city officials. Grand Rapids emerged as one of the cities with the highest number of users globally. According to city data, 15,000 people signed up for the service, with 11,000 becoming active users. These riders collectively traveled 32,000 miles, with the majority of participants having an annual income of around $50,000 or less.

The pilot program's success has prompted the city to continue making these micro-mobility options more accessible and affordable. Grand Rapids has strategically focused on providing discounted rides in targeted neighborhoods in a 12 mile radius where the need for cost-effective transportation is particularly high. This proves that Grand Rapids' ongoing efforts to expand access to bikes and scooters can make a huge difference for the community.
