Hotel Yorba Closes: Detroit Landmark Immortalized by White Stripes Shuts Down
I’ll be honest, this one hurts. News broke earlier this week that the Hotel Yorba, the crumbling but iconic Detroit hotel forever tied to The White Stripes, has officially been shut down by the city.
Inspectors finally pulled the plug on Monday, September 22nd, citing a leaky roof, collapsing ceilings, infestations, and busted fire alarms. This meant the place was unfortunately falling apart, and residents (many of whom had nowhere else to go) were forced to leave on the spot.
On paper, it makes sense why it happened. The city can’t let people live in unsafe conditions, even if it’s an iconic building.
For most people, Hotel Yorba was just a cheap, run-down rooming house off I-75.
For us, it’s the backdrop of a song that captured a raw, Detroit-made magic. Jack and Meg White recorded “Hotel Yorba” back in 2001, even filming much of the music video inside.
Ever since, it’s been more than a hotel. Many fans like meeting have seen it as a landmark, and a touchstone for fans who know how much Detroit itself shaped the Stripes’ sound.
Now it’s boarded up, sitting on the market for $2.5 million, and facing an uncertain future. That’s the part that stings. Detroit has already lost too many pieces of its soul to neglect, demolition, or indifference. Losing the Yorba feels like one more cut.
But maybe there’s a silver lining. If anyone understands the importance of preserving weird, worn-out Detroit landmarks, it’s Jack White.
He’s already given us Third Man Records, a place that celebrates music history while making something new. Imagine if he scooped up the Hotel Yorba and turned it into something amazing: a music space, a museum, or just a beautifully strange tribute to the city that raised him.
It’s a long shot, sure. But I can’t help thinking: if there’s anyone who could breathe life back into the Hotel Yorba, it’s Jack.
