Michigan’s burger scene is a constant debate. Between old-school drive-ins, classic diners, and hip new smash burger spots, everyone has a favorite. With iconic chains born here and regional specialties like the olive burger, pinning down just one top burger in the state seems impossible.

That doesn't stop foodie publications from trying though. Often you'll see the same joints landing on these "best burger" lists, like Motz's Burgers in Detroit, Slabtown in Traverse City, and Clyde's in St. Ignace.

This time around it's Tasting Table searching for the best cheeseburger in each state. And while possibly well-known to a lot of folks, it's a restaurant that is new to me!
According to the outlet, the top burger in Michigan is served at Redcoat Tavern in metro Detroit. First opened in 1972, this local favorite now operates spots in Royal Oak and West Bloomfield.

Though it consistently gets attention from local and national media, the publication specifically singles out Redcoat's Brasserie Burger:
...Perhaps the most sought-after burger is the Brasserie Burger when ordered with the Piedmontese beef, which tends to be very tender. It comes with caramelized onions, smoked bacon, tomato, watercress, Swiss cheese, and Dijon mustard-mayo.

Beyond their customizable half-pound burgers, Redcoat operates as a classic British-American pub.

The menu features tavern staples like English-style fish and chips, Shepherd's pie, hand-battered onion rings, and their famous New England clam chowder. You will also find a long list of specialty sandwiches, including the Continental Reuben and the Mount Vernon ham-and-cheese.
