The Case of Aileen Wuornos

Born in Rochester, Michigan, Aileen Pittman (later Aileen Carol Wuornos) had a troubled childhood. When she was born, her parents separated and her father later spent time in mental institutions because of child molestation.

Aileen and her brother ended up living with their grandparents. However, Aileen dropped out of school during her teen years to be a prostitute.

This is where her reign of terror began. She was a menace between 1989 and 1990.

During those years, Aileen used her prostitution as a way to find her victims.

Aileen ended up killing seven middle-aged men and left their bodies along Florida and southern Georgia highways.

Some people think that she actually killed an eighth victim during this same time span.

Britannica says that Aileen's case

drew national attention to issues such as the relationship between gender and violence and the legal treatment of acts of self-defense by women.

In 1992, Aileen was convicted of one of the murders and sentenced to death. Later, she admitted that she had killed for profit and not in self-defense like her supporters believed. Plus, she later pleaded guilty to three more murders.

Aileen Wuornos died by lethal injection in October 2002.
