Chris McKellar, who founded and owns the Grand Rapids Downtown Market establishment, stopped in with Channel 95.7's "Connie and Curtis" to share the scoops this morning. The visit came ahead of Dessert Wars, which is Thursday night at Amway Grand Plaza hotel's Ambassador Ballroomin downtown Grand Rapids.

"Ice cream is a part of (the passion), but it's really a bigger umbrella of food and real food," said McKellar, who opened Love's in September 2013. "Ingredients are what drives us.

"We make it from scratch or we procure it someone who we know makes it."

Love's hand-crafted and made-from-scratch ice cream, vegan gelato, sorbet, baked goods and confections get their ingredients, for instances, from produce from Trillium Haven Farm in Jenison, pork from Crane Dance Farm in Middleville and milk from Grassfields Organic Cheeses in Coopersville.

Love's is among about a dozen sweet treat makers from Grand Rapids and across West Michigan taking part in Dessert Wars, presented by Channel 95.7 and Hobart Corp. Running 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Amway Grand Plaza, 187 Monroe Avenue NW, admission is $8 and children younger than 9 years old are $2 with tickets available at the door. Admission includes 15 sample tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Grand Rapids non-profit Kids' Food Basket.

McKellar brought in Field & Fire Almond Croissant ice cream, which besides Love's Ice Cream's ice cream handiwork includes almond croissant bits from Field & Fire's wood-fire artisan bakery in Grand Rapids. Like Love's, it's also located in the Grand Rapids Downtown Market at 435 Ionia Avenue NW.

He also brought in Mad Cap Captaincino's Brownie Expedition ice cream, with some ingredient from MadCap Coffee Company.

For Dessert Wars, Love's Ice Cream is bringing in chocolate viterals, cream puffs with chocolate ice cream in the middle, 14-day glacé cherries and couple of other "little components," McKellar said.

One thing Curtis was happy to find out: Love's is open year-round.
