Many who were upset about the idea that the logo would be changing have said the same thing, "But we've always been the Red Arrows!!!" That's not entirely correct.

The History of the Lowell Red Arrows

According to Red Arrow Sports, the school has had sports teams for years, but for many of those, the teams didn't have a mascot at all. Eventually, they started going by the Red Devils, but that name was discontinued in 1946 (shortly after they started using it).

Seems like a perfectly good name, but according to the Lowell Area Historical Museum,

a problem arose when concerned community leaders, church groups and citizens with no particular affiliation did not like the anti-Christian name.

How did they come up with the Red Arrows? According to the historical museum, a committee comprised of one student from each class in the high school. Together, those students decided upon the Red Arrows.

Are Lowell Schools Ditching the Red Arrows Name?

In recent years, rumors started circulating that the school would do away with the Red Arrows moniker because it was tied to Native American traditions. Good news for those who were upset - neither of those things is true.

The inspiration for the Red Arrows comes from the Army's 32nd Infantry Division (nicknamed the Red Arrows), which had many members from Michigan, and West Michigan specifically.

After getting a lot of questions and hearing the rumors themselves, the school took to social media to assure the community that the Red Arrow logo and identity aren't going anywhere.

The arrowhead design, while familiar to some, was introduced in more recent years by a few clubs and has never been part of our district's official branding. Our true identity lies in the student-designed Red Arrow logo that connects us to our deep historical roots. - Lowell Public Schools

So the Red Arrows will remain, but the school is focusing on sticking to the traditional logo as opposed to the arrowhead designs that have popped up in recent years.
