Metallica Awards GRCC with $100K Job-Training Grant
Metallica is helping out students here in Grand Rapids!
WZZM-13 reports that Grand Rapids Community College is one of 10 schools that's been awarded a $100,000 grant to connect students to welding jobs.
The band's All Within My Hands Foundation is working with the American Association of Community Colleges on the program.
The Metallica Scholars grant supports job training in community colleges and helps the band reinvest in cities where they've toured.
In a release, Lars Ulrich said,
“All of us in the band feel fortunate that music has provided us the opportunity to be successful doing something we are passionate about. We want to share our success with others so that they can find a job where they can do the same."
GRCC will use the grant to launch an intensive welding program for nontraditional students that will take less time to complete than traditional courses, have smaller classes, and flexible scheduling options.
The college will be working with local employers too, so students can be prepared for entering the work force.
GRCC President Bill Pink said in a statement,
"We're excited that Metallica and AACC will partner with GRCC to expand opportunities for people in West Michigan to gain in-demand skills leading to rewarding careers, Our programs prepare people for great jobs today and build on those skills as they start down a pathway of lifelong learning. This partnership will assist us in this work."
