This West Michigan Distillery Just Made Asparagus Gin (And We’re Not Mad About It)
If you thought asparagus was just for grilling or tossing in a spring salad, think again—because Long Road Distillers in Grand Rapids has gone full veggie-forward with their newest, weirdest, and somehow wonderful creation: Asparagin.
That’s right, it’s gin made with asparagus. And before you make that face, it’s got a good reason for existing.
“Asparagus is one of the most iconic spring crops in Michigan,” said co-founder Kyle VanStrien in a release. “We’ve always looked for ways to highlight local agriculture in unexpected ways.”
Mission accomplished, Kyle.
The new limited-edition spirit is described as “bold, herbaceous, and unapologetically Michigan,” because they say it was crafted with fresh asparagus grown right here in West Michigan.
While the idea might sound like something dreamed up after a few too many drinks, the team insists it’s a sincere (and delicious) tribute to Michigan farmers.
Makes sense, since our state is one of the top asparagus producers in the country. Why not add it to everything else like we do with blueberries and cherries?

Asparagin features flavor notes of dill, tarragon, chive, capers, lemon peel, and of course, juniper which makes it a gin lover’s garden party in a glass. And yes, Long Road is aware of that burning question: “Will I smell it later?” Their answer? …Maybe.
Asparagin will be available starting the first week of June. If you’re brave, curious, or just really into supporting Michigan agriculture with a side of cocktail culture, check out Long Road’s Spirit Finder to see where you can snag a bottle.
