When I think of things Michigan and Utah have in common, there isn't much that stands out to me.

My first thought is that both states have NBA teams and many great outdoor places to explore.

The other is that both have fluoride in the water.

At least for now, if the governor of Utah signs a new bill, fluoride in the water would be banned throughout the entire state.

Should Michigan Ban Fluoride In The Water Like This State Is Considering?

Last week, the Utah Legislature passed H.B. 81. Now, it just needs the signature of the Governor to be signed into law.

If that happens, fluoride in the water would be banned statewide in Utah.

This means that even if there are cities that want to have fluoride in their water, it wouldn't be allowed. Instead, people who want to have fluoride would need to get a prescription from their doctor and then take it to a pharmacist.

Good Reason For Michigan To Get Rid of Fluoride?

If you didn't know, a cool fact about Michigan is that it is the state where the first city in the country introduced fluoride into its water system.

Back in 1945, the city of Grand Rapids became the first city in the country to add fluoride to its water supply. The city's water filtration plant on Monroe Avenue began adding sodium fluoride to the water supply on January 25, 1945.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in many water sources. It is often added to a city's water supply to improve oral health and reduce cavities.

However, some argue that it is a waste.

According to ABC 4, Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, R-Salt Lake County, said that there is a difference between fluoride added to water systems and naturally occurring fluoride.

He argued that adding fluoride to what he considered a "universal good" was wrong for those who did not choose to have fluoride. He also raised cost concerns, noting that most fluoride is wasted on lawns and bathrooms.

While it seems likely that Utah will soon ban fluoride in all of its water, I do not see that happening here in Michigan anytime soon.

These food items however are definitely banned in Michigan
