The use of electric bikes is going up every day in Michigan- you've probably seen people ripping around town at a high speed on these motorized bicycles. So naturally in a move that reflects the rising popularity of electric bikes, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has updated its rules to allow certain e-bikes on state-owned trails.

This decision is a significant win for both outdoor enthusiasts and advocates of green transportation. Michigan, known for its extensive network of bike and walking trails, has long prohibited motorized vehicles on state trails. However, as e-bikes have surged in popularity for their convenience and eco-friendliness, the DNR recognized the need to adapt.

As of July, the DNR now permits the use of Class 1 e-bikes on all state trails. These bikes offer pedal assistance up to 20 miles per hour, making them a perfect option for those who want a bit of extra help on longer rides. Additionally, Class 2 e-bikes, which have a throttle and can reach similar speeds, are now allowed for individuals with disabilities, ensuring broader accessibility to the state’s natural beauty.

However, the rule change still restricts the use of Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour, due to concerns about safety and trail preservation.

For the growing number of Michiganders who have embraced e-bikes, this decision opens up new possibilities for exploration and exercise. Whether for commuting, leisure, or enjoying the scenic beauty of West Michigan’s trails, the inclusion of e-bikes is a step forward in promoting sustainable and accessible outdoor recreation.

The Michigan DNR said the use of electric bikes on state trails will be re-evaluated next year to decide if any changes need to be made to the policy. Either way- this is a fantastic start to what will hopefully inspire some new people to get out and enjoy all of the beauty of Michigan's bike trails and forests.
