This Is The Ideal First Mow Date for Michigan Lawns
There are several things you want to do before you fire up the lawn mower and start cutting the grass for the first time this year.
Right Temperature: You want to make sure the weather is consistently above 40 degrees before you mow the grass.
If you mow before it’s fully thawed from the winter, the blades of grass could get damaged.

Proper Height: For most lawns in Michigan, you want the grass to reach 2.5 to 3 inches in height before giving it the first cut of the season.
An important thing to remember, which I learned the hard way, is that when cutting your grass, you shouldn't remove more than one-third of its height.
If you do, it can cause many problems, including weakening the lawn and making it more vulnerable to disease, weeds, and pests.
Another thing you should do before the first cut is to remove any dead grass or other debris that has fallen into your yard.
I raked my backyard twice this weekend and was amazed at how much dead grass I was able to remove, even after doing it last fall.
If this sounds like too much work, you could always call the pros and find a local West Michigan landscaping business that will give your yard the TLC it needs to thrive.
