Genesee County Jail To Launch Music School Thanks To Country Singer Jelly Roll

Country Music singer Jellyroll has made a lot of headlines over the past few months after his December 5th visit to the Genesee County Jail in Flint, Michigan.

Not only did he give them an incredible performance, he also spoke about his own time in jail and how he turned his life around afterwards. During that trip, Jelly Roll also made a pact with Sheriff Christopher Swanson to invest in the inmates in the Genesee County jail by providing them with music opportunities.

"I'll invest in that, I'll give you a call... we'll chat"

And that's exactly what they did. In a post made by Detroit based country radio station WYCD, the Genesee County Jail has announced that in the summer of 2024, the Jelly Roll recording school will be opening.

In the above video, Sheriff Swanson announces that the correctional facility plans to offer courses on music theory, how to play instruments, how to write music and how to record music for inmates to enroll.

Having opportunities like this while behind bars will allow inmates to be more productive while they serve their time, while simultaneously giving them a set of skills they can transfer into a productive career once they are released. There's a good reason why Jelly Roll issued this challenge and Sheriff Swanson was eager to answer.

This program is truly the purpose of rehabilitation, giving inmates a chance to express themselves and be creative. And hey, who knows, maybe Jelly will let them produce a future album- or even better, let someone from the program have a feature on his.
