After several attempts, he increased the force of his strikes, successfully dislodging the obstruction and allowing Arya to breathe again.

Schoolcraft Elementary Principal Alexandra Velez praised both students for their courage and quick response.

She said that Matthew did not seek recognition for his actions; instead, he returned to his daily activities until others acknowledged his heroic deed.

Matthew shared that he knew what to do because he had experienced a similar situation in the past.

He advised other children to either alert a teacher or attempt to help if they are aware of how to respond in emergencies.

How To Help Someone That's Choking

If someone is choking and needs helps this is what you should do.

Back Blows: Lean the person forward slightly. Use the heel of your hand to deliver five firm back blows between their shoulder blades, checking after each blow if the obstruction has cleared.

Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver): Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it above their navel.
Grasp your fist with your other hand and thrust inward and upward five times
