Keep Your Packages Safe: Tips to Avoid Porch Pirates in Grand Rapids
If you scored some great deals during Black Friday or Cyber Monday, you’re probably anxiously awaiting a pile of packages to arrive on your doorstep. Unfortunately, so are the porch pirates in our area, and they're getting more and more crafty with finding ways to steal your stuff before you get home. These thieves watch for deliveries and swipe boxes right from your doorstep, turning holiday joy into frustration.
In Grand Rapids, as well as in the rest of West Michigan, law enforcement sees an uptick in package theft during the holiday season. In fact, earlier this year we were named one of the worst cities in the US for package theft. It’s no wonder that more and more packages are left vulnerable to these greedy and opportunistic thieves.
The good news? There are steps you can take to attempt to outsmart these grinches and keep your holiday haul safe.
How to Outsmart Porch Pirates This Holiday in Grand Rapids:
1. Use a Secure Delivery Location
While some of us may have the luxury of working from home- if you don't, (and If possible,) send your packages to a secure spot like your workplace or a trusted neighbor’s house. Amazon and UPS offer delivery lockers that keep your items safe until you pick them up.
If those are options, Amazon offers you the option to pick up at locations all around West Michigan on your own time, from safe easy-to-access lockers. (My favorite to use is the one at Whole Foods on 28th Street.)
2. Install a Doorbell Camera
Devices like Ring cameras not only help deter thieves but also provide clear evidence if something does go missing. And if you really want to spook them, you can at least shout at them as they try to run away with your stuff.
3. Track Deliveries Closely
Most carriers offer real-time tracking, so you know exactly when to expect your package. Try to be home or have someone available during delivery windows, that way you can grab your package off your step as soon as it arrives. Turning on notifications can help you get real time updates.
4. Request Signature Upon Delivery
Many retailers let you add this option at checkout. This way, your package won’t be left unattended. However, this may be a challenge if you aren't home during the day to catch your package.
5. Add Extra Security with Package Boxes
A lockable package box on your porch ensures that only you can retrieve your items. They're not super expensive if you buy a lot online anyway, so make the investment in yourself and your piece of mind.
6. Team Up with Neighbors
Watch out for each other’s deliveries and bring in packages for friends when they’re not home. If you have a good system of people watching out, thieves will take note and likely skip your street on their next stakeout.
This season, don’t let porch pirates ruin your holiday spirit. A little planning can go a long way in ensuring your gifts make it under the tree—not into the hands of a thief.
