Rockwell Republic Closes After 17 Years in Downtown Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids has a colorful and brilliant food scene that is growing every month, but unfortunately along the way sometimes we lose some of our old favorites.

Another staple of Grand Rapids’ dining scene has announced they are closing their doors to the public effective immediately.

Rockwell Republic, a beloved downtown restaurant known for its creative fusion of American and Asian cuisine, has announced on social media that it will be shutting down after 17 years in business.

Since opening in May 2008, Rockwell Republic has been a go-to spot for locals and visitors alike, serving up craft cocktails, award-winning sushi, and a celebrated brunch in its historic 140-year-old building. Over the years, it earned multiple accolades, including recognition for the best happy hour, best Bloody Marys, and best brunch in the city.

Despite its long-standing success, Rockwell Republic cited financial challenges as a key reason for its closure, echoing the struggles faced by many restaurants and bars in recent years. The decision, though difficult, ensures that all staff members will be offered positions at affiliated restaurants.

While the closure marks the end of an era, the memories created within Rockwell Republic’s walls will live on for both their employees and those who enjoyed everything from late-night drinks to weekend brunches and celebrations with friends. For nearly two decades, the restaurant played an integral role in the city’s food scene so it's a bummer to see it go.

Rockwell Republic expressed deep gratitude to its patrons and staff, thanking them for 17 unforgettable years and they said they offered the staff jobs at their other restaurants around town. Though the doors may be closing, the impact of this downtown favorite won’t soon be forgotten.
