Saugatuck Brewing and Michigan DNR Team Up Again to Protect Sturgeon Population
There are so many ways you can get involved to help Michgian's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) save our endangered Stuergon population. But right now, the best one is just by cracking open a cold beer and enjoying.
Michigan is known for two things—its incredible craft beer scene and its dedication to preserving the state’s natural beauty. This year, those two worlds are coming together once again as Saugatuck Brewing Company partners with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help protect one of the state’s most threatened species, the lake sturgeon.

While one of the most well known ways we help Sturgeon in Michgian is by allowing a very limited hunting season (that this year, only lasted less than 20 minutes.)
Saugatuck Brewing has launched a new initiative, the “Lake Street Light x Lake Sturgeon Program,” centered around their latest brew, Lake Street Light. For every sale of this crisp, refreshing lager (which comes in at just 96 calories and 4% ABV), a portion of the proceeds will go directly toward efforts to restore lake sturgeon habitats and support population growth.
Lake sturgeon are an ancient species, that were once abundant in Michigan’s waterways. Unfortunately, now they're listed as threatened.
If you don't know about them, These fish spend their early years in rivers before moving into the Great Lakes, with only limited harvesting permitted in select waters. By purchasing a can or pint of Lake Street Light, beer lovers can help ensure these incredible fish continue to thrive, which is a double win for everyone.
If you missed it last year, this isn’t Saugatuck Brewing’s first collaboration with the DNR. Last year, their Rainbow Rodeo beer helped raise $10,000 to support trout habitat restoration. With this latest effort, they’re proving once again that Michigan’s craft beer industry isn’t just about great brews, it’s also about giving back to the state’s outdoor heritage and the incredible fish that live in our great lakes.
If you want to find a location that has Lake Street Light, you can find a really awesome locator on their website. (I'm already on the hunt to try it myself, don't worry.)
