Schuler Books To Close Their Downtown Grand Rapids Location

Schuler Books, who currently own and operate three stores in the greater Grand Rapids area, will soon be closing their downtown location, according to owners Bill and Cecile Fehsenfeld. The store's lease will be coming up for renewal soon, and the owners have decided not to renew it for their space on Fountain St. (inside of the Steketee building).

According to a letter posted on their Facebook page,

While sales have been steady, they have not been outstanding. It's hard to justify another commitment. Regretfully, the experiment must come to an end. We will be running a farewell sale and closing down the store this winter. This is a hard decision to take, but the right one.

The downtown location boasted a lot of things that other locations lack, including their possession of a liquor license for their Chapbook Cafe, but that wasn't enough to make the store profitable enough to keep open.

The store will be holding a sale on all of their remaining merchandise starting on Monday, and their employees will be moved to jobs at either the 28th St. or Alpine Ave. location once the store has officially closed its doors.
