Rapper’s Viral Track About The U.P. Has Michigan Totally Vibing
If you’ve ever cracked open a cold Oberon, passed a pasty across the passenger seat, and romanticized about disappearing into the pine-lined magic of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, there’s a rapper who gets you.
Meet Scoochie Boochie: part rapper, part lore master, all hilarious. The Michigan-born, Chicago-based artist is going viral for his tongue-in-cheek anthem “The U.P.,” and it’s both a bop and brilliantly weird love letter to Pure Michigan’s weirdest, most wonderful remote corner.
In the video, Scoochie swaggers his way through the northwoods, dropping bars like:
“I got Oberon in my koozie, pass that pasty to me” and “Home of Yuker and Cougars, (and the other kind of cougars)”
If you walk away without laughing at these brilliantly crafted jokes, you’ve got no sense of humor or love of our state. It’s part Yooper fantasy, part comedy sketch, and 100% a certified Michigan jam.
Scoochie Boochie’s signature style blends rap, absurdist humor, and an entire universe of “Scoochiverse” lore. Born (allegedly) from a volcano, the rapper first caught fire in Grand Rapids’ comedy scene before building a cult following in Chicago through shows at iO, Second City, and the Green Mill.
His fifth album, Dadquest, dropped in late 2023, but it’s this U.P. track that’s getting everyone’s attention right now. And, he deserves it. In a world of generic summer songs about the same five places we can’t even imagine going to, Scoochie gave us one our midwest hearts can enjoy year-round.
So whether you’re a born-and-bred Yooper or just a troll who’s dreamed of escaping to the land of smoked fish, cabin getaways, and mystery lights in the woods… this track is your new anthem.
